The purpose of the Lake County Corrections Division is to provide secure incarceration and detention for the following: felons, gross misdemeanants, misdemeanants, pre-trial detainees, juvenile non-status offenders, MDOC offenders, witnesses and others being detained in protective custody. The corrections division shall further strive to provide an atmosphere, which is safe where the rights of inmates are protected, as well as promote the humane care of inmates. It is the goal of the Lake County Corrections Division to establish an environment of respect and dignity toward prisoners and to strive for staff sensitivity toward persons under their care.
It is the responsibility of the Lake County Sheriff to operate the county correctional facilities in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. It is a core function of the facilities to be fiscally prudent while providing continuous monitoring for inmate and staff safety.
The responsibilities for inmate care and Officer safety are tremendous. Correctional Officers are responsible for facility security by overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a criminal offense, sentenced to serve time in jail and those offenders housed for the MDOC. Officers maintain security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults and escapes.
In order to facilitate this massive undertaking, the Lake County Corrections Division management system is divided into two divisions: The main jail which opened in the mid 1960’s with a capacity of 28 and later remodeled in 2000 bringing the capacity up to 48. Staffing consists of Chief Deputy, Jail Sergeant, 4 Corporal’s, 10 Corrections officers. Secondary facility Lake County Residential Reentry Program opened in 1991 with a capacity of 110 and renovated in 2006 bringing the capacity up to 300 ( 240 males and 60 females ). The LCRRP facility houses MDOC parole offenders for 90 to 120 days. Staffing consists of Chief Deputy, Staff Sergeant, 4 Sergeants, 4 Corporals and 30 Corrections officers. Michigan Department of Corrections staff on site include: State Supervisor, Transportation staff and Parole officers.
