Due to the pandemic, Coronavirus COVID-19, on March 16th, 2020, the Lake County Courthouse closed to the general public. Effective Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 the Lake County Courthouse will be open to appointment only until further notice. Below is a list of instructions to continue operations with the various Lake County Departments located inside of the Lake County Courthouse. Please try to conduct business online and/or over the phone as much as possible.

Members of the general public will be screened at the entrance regarding COVID-19. If you have a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (temperature will be taken), or say yes to any of the screening questions, you will be denied entrance.

Members of the general public must wear a mask inside of the Lake County Courthouse. See Governor’s Executive Order 2020-96 regarding face coverings: Rules governing face coverings. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, any individual able to medically tolerate a face covering must wear a covering over his or her nose and mouth—such as a homemade mask, scarf, bandana, or handkerchief—when in any enclosed public space.

Lake County Building Department

Open for appointments only. Go to www.lakecounty-michigan.com. Here you will find Building, Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical permit applications that can be printed out and faxed to (231)745-7214 or mailed to 800 10th Street Suite 110, Baldwin, Michigan 49304. Or if you can scan in or take a photo of the application, both sides, and send to, bldgdept@co.lake.mi.us. Permits can be paid over the phone with credit cards or debit. The staff will be in the office each day and can be reached at (231)756-2722 to assist you. Inspections will not be affected in any way at this time. Please call to make an appointment for the inspection that you may require. Although Building Permits can be faxed, scanned or mailed, significant documents such as Blue Prints will have to be mailed.

Lake County Prosecutor’s Office

Open by appointment only or court appearance. Please call (231)745-2775 or by fax at (231)745-6224. Will be staffed at all times.

Lake County Treasurer’s Office

Open by appointment only. The Treasurer’s Office will be taking in payments by Credit Cards and directing people how to pay as they call in, also collecting the heads of department monies as usual, mail and banking will be the same. TO PAY DELINQUENT TAXES USING A DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD:

Lake County Clerk’s Office / Register of Deeds

By appointment only. No more than (2) people maximum. Online searches/forms (courthouse wedding information, marriage licenses, general election information, vital statistics, DBA’s, CPL applications, military discharge, notary, fee schedules, online voter registration) can be done at the Register of Deeds page at http://www.lakecounty-michigan.com/Courthouse/RegisterofDeeds.aspx

Coronavirus Disease 2019 COVID-19

On March 10th, 2020, Michigan Governor Whitmer declared a State of Emergency regarding the  pandemic, Coronavirus COVID-19.

Effective March 16th, 2020 at 5:00 p.m., the Lake County Courthouse will be closed to the general public until further notice. This is to ensure the safety of our public and employees in preventing the spread of this virus.

Please visit the Lake County website www.lakecounty-michigan.com. for a list of departments and updated information. We will continue operations with the various Lake County Departments located inside of the Lake County Courthouse.

Any non-emergency related questions can be found by the below websites. 2-1-1 is another resource regarding information.
